First Annual 5K Run/Walk Makes Great Strides for Conservation

On Memorial Day, May 26, 2025, the Piedmont Fox Hounds Conservation Fund and Orange County Hounds Conservation Foundation welcomed over 50 participants to the First Annual 5K Run/Walk for Conservation at the beautiful Kinross and Smitten Farms.

Runners and walkers set out on a scenic course that wound through rolling fields, shaded woodlands, and the historic “Segregation Lane,” offering a rare opportunity to enjoy the stunning countryside while reflecting on the history and heritage of the Piedmont and Orange County territories. It was a truly beautiful day to explore our protected landscapes and come together in support of conservation.

The event highlighted the power of community in preserving open land and rural traditions. Special thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Zohar Ben-Dov and Mrs. Anne Backer for generously hosting participants on their conserved land. Their commitment to conservation ensures that these views and habitats will remain protected for generations to come. At the finish line, congratulations went to the top finishers: Patrick Murphy (Top Male Finisher), Emily Hannum (Top Female Finisher), and Nancy Alcock (Top Junior Finisher).

The energy and enthusiasm of the morning carried through to warm conversations and shared appreciation for the mission at hand. Thanks to all who joined us, we continue to strengthen conservation efforts and safeguard the rural heritage that makes our region so special.
