Looney Scholar Bryan Sandoval’s Summer Internship

My summer at the kennels was a truly memorable experience. I had the chance to work with Jordan and Johnny, two dedicated and knowledgeable men who made each day enjoyable while sharing their skills in ways that will stay with me. From learning how to change the string on a weed eater to operating a bush hog, they gave me opportunities to take on real responsibilities that built my confidence and helped me develop skills in a hands-on way.

One of the most unique aspects of the summer was spending time with the hounds. Caring for so many hounds at once was something entirely new for me, and it gave me a real sense of respect for the effort and dedication it takes to manage them. The puppies were definitely a highlight! Taking care of them was not only fun but really rewarding and seeing them grow each week made me appreciate even more how important the kennels are in their development.

Looking back, I am grateful not only for the practical experience but also for the sense of teamwork I found at the kennels. The work was steady and often demanding, but it was always worthwhile. The people, the hounds, and the daily rhythm of life there made the summer truly special. I know I will miss being part of the kennels, and I will carry the lessons and memories from this experience with me into the future.

I’m really grateful to have received the Andrew Donovan Looney Passion & Dreams Scholarship. Thanks to this support, I was able to spend the summer at the kennels. It was an experience that gave me the chance to pitch in, learn, and make memories I’ll never forget.
