On Friday, October 3, 2025, the PFH Conservation Fund hosted a second guided hike along one of the region’s most scenic waterways with renowned naturalist Michael Gaige.
Participants explored a three-mile stretch of Goose Creek, which winds 54 miles through the heart of the northern Blue Ridge and Piedmont, from Manassas Gap to Leesburg. The hike, which departed from the low water bridge at the Vogels’ Oak Spring and ended at the Butlers’ Gap Run, led attendees through rolling farmland and historic countryside, offering an immersive experience in both the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the area.
Throughout the journey, Michael Gaige shared captivating insights into Goose Creek’s history, from early landowners and historic mill sites to the evolving landscape and native vegetation. He also discussed modern land management practices and ongoing conservation efforts aimed at protecting the future of this iconic watershed.
“Michael always delivers an incredible experience”, said PFHCF Chair, Dulany Morison. “His knowledge and ability to engage participants is astounding and we look forward to working with him on a program North of Route 50 in the spring.”
It was a special opportunity to experience Goose Creek through the eyes of an expert, as well as a memorable day for history buffs, conservationists, and nature lovers alike!
