On October 25, 2024, join PFHCF and renowned ecologist Michael Gaige for a walk along Goose Creek.
Coursing 54 miles, Goose Creek drains the northern Blue Ridge and Piedmont country from Manassas Gap to Leesburg. We’ll cover about five miles along the stream as it meanders through bucolic Piedmont farm country near Upperville and Rectortown. We’ll look at old mill sites and discuss some of the early landowners. We’ll talk about historic and present vegetation and the way the landscape has changed over 250 years. We’ll also discuss the land management challenges and successes property owners in this area have worked on in recent years.
Dress for the weather and bring water. We won’t be crossing the stream; however, boots or muck boots are recommended for tall grass and wet areas. There will be an optional early exit at Oak Spring (~two miles) if any hikers are feeling fatigued.
